Kosciuszko measures 2228 meters in height, making it the highest mountain of mainland Australia and by far the smallest of the Seven Summits. It was named by the Polish explorer Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of the Polish national hero and hero of the American Revolutionary War General Tadeusz Kościuszko, because of its perceived resemblance to the Kościuszko Mound in Kraków.
The mountain is located in the Australian state of New South Wales in the Snowy Mountains. The area around the mountain is known as Kosciuszko National Park. The climb is no great challenge, and can be accomplished as a day hike via a well defined path to the summit. While it is only a day climb, it proved a fantastic warm up ahead of Martin and Kat Mahers wedding in Melbourne in early 2010.
